Glacier Tour - Upsala & Others (Argentina)
(click any picture to get enlargement)

This is the last picture page in the glacier series ... it begins the second day of glacier tours.

The day started with another taxi drive from El Calafate.  We had the same driver as yesterday.  He was a pleasant guy who could keep up quite a conversation.  We got dropped off at another harbor where we boarded a tour boat for the day.

We left the harbor in a group of three boats.  As we would be traveling quite a distance today, I think the boats stayed close enough together to ensure that one boat could help another if there was trouble.

The Argentina flag ===>
was quite nice.

From the start of our trip we passed icebergs which were flowing from the glaciers on the other side of the lake.  We were told that these were the remnants of gigantic icebergs and that it has took them about a month to get blown to this end of the lake... along the way they lost a lot of mass.

The first glaciers we came to had withdrawn back into the valleys that had created them.  By the looks of the trees along the water, it has been a long time (centuries?) since they made it to the lake.

We were traveling towards the far end of the lake, to the large Upsala glacier.  As we got closer we saw the most fantastic icebergs.  The captain was great and circled around some of the best ones.  The bartenders got the captain to ram against some bergs so they could make glacier ice drinks.

This set of pictures is of the nicest iceberg we saw... and no filters... this is the true color!

This was an interesting iceberg in that it had a cave!

We were expecting to see a polar bear emerge at any moment.

We finally could start to see the Upsala glacier, but then it started to rain a little... sorry about the poor quality of the pictures!

From this distance you could see the debris lines on the top of the glacier.  It truly gives you the impression of a flowing river... in this case the river is made of ice.

The following are views of the Upsala glacier

... the left side ...

... the middle...

... and the right side.

We then said goodbye to the Upsala glacier and headed towards an inlet where we would break for lunch.

The ferry dropped us off at a little restaurant for lunch.  We brought a picnic lunch with us and decided to head inland where there was a little lake which was fed by another glacier.

We were shocked to find this  little lake stuffed with icebergs.

The you can see, in the background, the glacier which flows down into this lake.

We had lunch, a bottle of wine, and enjoyed the sun & the view.

We then took:
- the ferry back to the harbor,
- the taxi back to El Calafate, and
- the Plane back to Buenos Aires.

We visited with friends for a few days and then flew back up to Caracas... we had a very nice trip to Argentina, indeed!
